The Fast & Furious History of Amtrak

Amtrak is the public face of a government-owned corporation, that’s right, The National Railroad Passenger Corporation: created in 1971 by Congress and President Richard Nixon to serve inter-city travelers.  Who knew?

[Call me crazy, stupid, whatever, but I've been riding Amtrak for years and never knew it was government-owned until researching to write this short history, *shrugs*.]

The United States Government wholly owns all controlling shares of Amtrak, the board of directors being directly appointed by the President and approved by the US Senate.  Of course, it’s unknown if the Senate approves the issuance of Amtrak coupon codes.  After all, sometimes it seems like they’re allergic to saving money ;)

But Uncle Sam didn’t always have his ear to the railroad tracks.

In the early 20th century the railways were privately owned, railroad travel being all the rage; maxing out at 254,252 miles of track, the train was a primary mode of mobilization for a majority of inter-city movers n’ shakers.

Unfortunately, losing ground to the automobile and expansion of the National Highway System in the 1930s, the railroads began a roller coaster decline, resurging only slightly during WWII, then bottoming out in the 1950s with yearly losses totaling almost $8,000,000,000 (YES, that’s billion, adjusted for inflation of course).  Ouch.

By the mid 1960s railroad usage was down a whopping 85% compared to its early-century heyday.  It may have been wise to start issuing some coupon codes right about then :P

Between Government regulation, runaway taxation and heavy subsidies for highways and commercial aviation, the railway system was smacked clean off its tracks.

But at least they had their long-standing contracts with The US Postal Service to keep them chugging along, right?  Wrong.

Even the USPS was migrating away from the railways, onto the roads and into the air.  By the late 1960s the railroads had dramatically lost favor, having been all but deserted by the American economy and left teetering on the edge of bankruptcy. Bummer :(

Again, a great time to pump out some Amtrak promotion codes and get those riders excited!?!

Hold our horses, there was no Amtrak just yet.  And there might never have been had the Government not amended its involvement and made way for the railways to stay on track.

In 1970, President Nixon signed The Rail Passenger Service Act and brought the good ole rails back from the brink of extinction.  The corporation formed to fashion the comeback was The National Railroad Passenger Corporation; first operating under the brand name Railpax, then shortly after changing its name to Amtrak.

OK, now they can issue some Amtrak coupon codes.  Hooah!

So, with only a handful of holdouts, the bulk of the railroads were consolidated under the Amtrak brand, chugging along by the watchful eye of the United States Government and well on its way to a 40+ year history of subsidized services from the Northeast Corridor to the Sunset Limited.

To say that Amtrak had a rough start is an understatement.

In fact, since the beginning Amtrak has been a hotbed of political maneuverings and contentious business interests.  But that hasn’t stopped Amtrak from consistently growing its ridership, or issuing some excellent Amtrak promotion codes and discounts along the way.

Thank goodness for the almighty Amtrak coupon code!

In fact, Amtrak’s passenger business has seen an impressive surge of late, pushing its ridership to new all time highs.

Though generally considered the slowest of all First World (and some third world) rail systems, and still technically unprofitable, Amtrak is an important and easily recognizable part of the American cultural landscape, not to mention a really fun way to travel around North America!

Today Amtrak serves 30,000,000+ riders a year and employs almost 20,000 people.  It also has a fighting chance to become the backbone of any hot new high-speed rail system America decides to implement in the future.

And you can bet all the money you’re going to save that Amtrakcouponcodes.com will be along for the ride, hooking you up with NEW Amtrak coupon codes and stoking your savings with the latest Amtrak promotional discounts… From here to infinity, and beyond!
